Sewer System Smoke Testing Program

Published: June 1, 2026 @ 1:30 p.m.

This Notice is to inform that the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield Public Works Department will be conducting a Sewer System Smoke Testing Program.

This work is necessary to help locate and remediate groundwater and/or surface water infiltration in the Town’s sanitary sewer system and extend the treatment capacity of the wastewater lagoon.

Testing will be conducted between June 8 and June 12, 2026, in conjunction with GEMTEC Consulting Engineers and Scientists.

The smoke, which is injected into the sanitary sewer system, may exit through roof drains, building vents, around exterior walls, manhole covers, or holes in the ground.

Please Note: The smoke is NON-TOXIC, HARMLESS AND CREATES NO FIRE HAZARD.

This smoke should not enter your home or business unless there are defects in plumbing such as dried up floor drains (traps). Opening a window for a few minutes will allow the smoke to dissipate quickly.

If smoke does enter your home or building during the testing period, you may contact the on-site GEMTEC Crew Chief at (506) 461-8474 or any member of the smoke testing crew while they are in your area.

The information obtained from the Smoke Testing Program will be instrumental in improving the Town’s sanitary sewer system and will assist in lowering the system’s operation and maintenance costs.

Residents who are not connected to the municipal sewer system may notice smoke while passing through areas being tested in the community.

Your cooperation is appreciated.

This Notice will be delivered by mail to residents connected to the municipal sewer system.
