FREDERICTON (GNB) – The River Watch Program for the 2026 freshet season has ended.
Water levels along the Saint John River basin continue to decrease and return to seasonal levels.
“Every day, our team at the Hydrology Centre worked closely with our partners to deliver important flood forecasts,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage. “This is crucial information, which is used to help New Brunswickers take action and prepare when flooding is expected.”
The program started on March 11 and provided information on the status of rivers and the potential for ice jams and other flood issues during the ice-out and spring freshet season.
“This year’s freshet season passed without significant impacts, and we are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved in monitoring conditions and helping keep communities informed,” said Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin. “I want to thank the many partners who worked together throughout the season to support public safety and preparedness across the province.”
The program is a joint effort involving the Department of Environment and Local Government, NB Power, and the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization of the Department of Justice and Public Safety. Other partners include Environment and Climate Change Canada, watershed groups, federal and provincial governments, and United States agencies.
“Although the freshet season is ending, New Brunswickers should continue to be prepared for other emergencies that can occur throughout the year, including drought, wildfires and hurricanes,” said Gauvin. “Having an emergency plan and emergency kit in place can make a significant difference when unexpected events happen.”
