FREDERICTON (GNB) – The River Watch Program for the 2025 freshet season ends today.
Water levels along the Saint John River basin continue to decrease and return to normal.
“We were fortunate this year’s freshet didn’t have significant impacts,” said Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin. “I thank our partners for their work over the past several weeks – from those who performed the flood forecasting to those who helped ensure safety during the ice jams we experienced. Many partners were involved in keeping New Brunswickers safe from potential flooding.”
The program started on March 11 and provided information on the status of rivers and the potential for ice jams and other flood issues during the ice-out and spring freshet season.
The program is a joint effort involving the Department of Environment and Local Government, NB Power, and the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization of the Department of Justice and Public Safety. Other partners include Environment and Climate Change Canada, watershed groups, federal and provincial governments, and United States agencies.
“While our risks from the freshet are over, I urge New Brunswickers to stay prepared for other dangers they may face, including wildfires and the upcoming hurricane season,” said Gauvin. “Emergencies can hit us anytime, and it’s crucial we’re prepared. All individuals, communities and businesses should have the necessary emergency plans to stay safe.”
