Residents asked to prepare for the possible effects of Hurricane Lee

The Town of Grand Bay-Westfield Emergency Management Organization (EMO) is asking residents to be prepared for the possible effects of Hurricane Lee including heavy rainfall, localized flooding, strong winds and power outages. The current forecast timeframe is early Saturday morning (September 16) until Sunday afternoon (September 17).

Town is prepared

The Town’s Emergency Management Organization (EMO) is closely monitoring Hurricane Lee, and prepared to respond as necessary.

The Town’s Fire-Rescue Department has implemented its Storm Preparation Plan.

The Town’s Public Works Department has prepared by clearing main catch basins, as well as ensuring signage and barricades are ready.

How residents can prepare

– Have a 72-hour emergency kits ready. Residents should have all the necessities for themselves and their families: water, food, flashlights, radio, batteries, first aid kit, prescription medications, infant formula, cash (ATM machines might not be operational in times of crisis) etc. For details, visit HERE
– Secure or store items such as outdoor furniture, garbage cans, compost bins, BBQs, planters, sports equipment etc…
– If able, keep the catch basins adjacent to properties free from debris
– Seal any basement windows and doors to prevent flooding
– Severe weather often causes power outages. Make time now to ensure you know how to safely operate your generator in an emergency and prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. For details from NB Power, visit HERE

Reminders for motorists

During severe weather, travel is not recommended if possible.
Allow for extra travel time;
Obey any road closures (do not drive around barricades);
Ensure headlights are on; and
Keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
