The following information is provided by the Telecommunications Alliance. For details, visit HERE.
Starting January 20, 2023, business and residential customers in New Brunswick will have to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the phone number – for all local communications.
For example, to contact the Town Office, you will be required to dial 506-738-6400.
Why 10-digit dialing / Addition of New Area Code
The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and will pave the way for the addition of a new area code, 428, starting on April 29, 2023, as the 506 area code reaches capacity.
9-1-1
The 9-1-1 emergency number remains a three-digit number.
Do you have a number in the 506 area?
Anyone who already has a number with area code 506 will keep the same number.
Dates to remember
Starting January 20, 2023
Business and residential customers need to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the 7-digit phone number – for all local calls. If the area code is not dialed, the caller will hear a reminder message before the call is completed.
Starting April 15, 2023
10-digit dialing will be mandatory: business and residential customers need to dial the area code followed by the 7-digit number for all local calls. If the 10-digit number is not dialed, the call will not be completed.
After April 29, 2023
A new area code, 428, will be introduced gradually and will be used in the same region as area code 506.
