FREDERICTON (GNB) – Free radon test kits are available at public libraries across the province beginning today.

The government and its public libraries are continuing to partner with the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council to provide the free testing.

“We distributed 11,996 kits to New Brunswickers last year,” said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours. “I am so pleased with how successful the program was the first time, and hope it will grow during its second year as even more New Brunswickers take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Radon Test Distribution Program was first launched in 2025 with the council and NB Lung to coincide with the start of heating season. NB Lung will continue to promote the program and offer educational information on the importance of radon testing.

The kits include a long-term testing device that must be kept in the home for at least 91 days, as well as information about radon gas provided by the Department of Health.

To get the most accurate results, it is suggested radon tests be conducted during the colder months when homes are more often closed. Distribution of test kits will end on Feb. 28, 2027.

Libraries are also still accepting completed tests from last year. Homeowners should return the tests to their local public library so that they can be forwarded to the council.

Radon is an invisible, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. Radon gas can enter a home very easily through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps around service pipes, floor drains and unsealed sump pits. Too much radon can have a negative impact on a person’s health. It is estimated that one in four homes in New Brunswick has high radon levels.
