Nature Preserve of NB – Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve
The Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve is an environmentally sensitive area located along the shore of the St. John River. This 50-acre property was acquired from the Province of New Brunswick in 2010 by the Nature Trust of New Brunswick with access to the property via River Valley Drive at Station Street in Grand Bay-Westfield. The main sign for the Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve is located on River Valley Drive at Station Street. Just look for the blueberry symbol signage—it will direct you along Bayview Road to the main parking area at Shannon Road.
Locator maps are provided at the main entrance sign on River Valley Drive and at the parking area at the end of Bayview Road/Shannon Road. Blueberry signage also directs pedestrians to the start of the entrance trail which runs parallel to the NB Southern Railway tracks towards the property.
The Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve is managed by a group of volunteers, organized in 2009 as the Friends of Blueberry Hill, to provide sustainable stewardship of the property, including maintenance of several trails and a new pedestrian bridge crossing Henderson Brook. From the parking area, the main entrance to the Nature Preserve is located across the road (at the end of Bayview Road) and marked by a series of large boulders.
An engraved rock by Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission (FRSWC) and Crane Mountain Enhancement Inc. (CMEI) marks the entrance to the trails, acknowledging this project as part of over $1,000,000 donated to projects within the host community. It represents all the sponsors of the project and the fundraising efforts, particularly those who donated to the Stewardship fund in memory of Gary Mittleholtz, who’s heart was close to this Nature Preserve. A third engraved rock established in memorial of Gary Mittleholtz can be found just before the Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve bridge.
The Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve was officially opened on June 14, 2014.
