The Town of Grand Bay-Westfield is a progressive community, friendly by nature, and experiencing change. The Town is recruiting a motivated individual to work within the Works Department team as a Skilled Labourer. The successful candidate will make a difference in the community by providing all season maintenance including snow control and rehabilitation of infrastructure throughout the municipality.

Job Description and Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in every phase of infrastructure replacement, maintenance and repair, and will be responsible for a variety of tasks to keep Town infrastructure in good condition. One of the key roles of the skilled laborer position is the ability to operate heavy equipment. Other duties will be assigned as necessary such as infrastructure, building, and facility maintenance.

  1. Perform required excavations to create trenches utilizing equipment or when necessary, though manual digging.
  2. Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines or using hand tools.
  3. Manually or through use of equipment, place pipe accurately and according to blueprints.
  4. Place barrels, culverts, drywells, and manholes as required.
  5. Backfill trenches with required materials upon completion of the job.
  6. Tend to and operate a variety of machines and equipment.
  7. During winter operations, operate snow removal equipment in an efficient and law-abiding manner.
  8. Engage in all forms of labor to assist in the successful completion of construction projects from start to finish.
  9. Landscaping and beautification
  10. Operate a variety of tools including pumps, vibrators, pneumatic drills, chainsaws, and other portable machines/equipment as required.
  11. Other tasks as required.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Class 3 Driver’s Licence
  • (1 -3) years’ plow truck operating experience.
  • Previous municipal maintenance and rehabilitation experience considered an asset (1-3 years).
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
  • Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations.

Selected candidate will be required to submit a criminal record check and driver’s abstract prior to being engaged.
